On 12th October 2021, Euromontana organised its annual conference on “Being young in a mountain area in 2021”.
The event was the opportunity to highlight the needs and desires of young people for the future of the mountains and to showcase the possible ways to address their needs.
During the conference different mountain organisations, that have recently surveyed the needs of young people, presented the results of this large survey that collected more than 1100 answers all over Europe.
The results from these surveys demonstrate that mountain areas are attractive for young people but also show that education and employment remain problematic in most areas. They also highlight how important are environmental issues and nature protection for today’s youth.
Expectations and wishes of young people were discussed as well as the answers provided by policy-makers to try to answer these needs. Finally, the conference gave the floor to some young people to directly share with the audience some positive experience of innovations led by young people.
The results of Euromontana’s European survey on mountain youth will be published in a report, together with country profiles, by January 2022.
