President Ursula von der Leyen has launched the Strategic Dialogue on the Future of Agriculture, a vital initiative aimed at shaping a collective vision for the EU’s farming and food system.

Chaired by Professor Peter Strohschneider, the dialogue brings together key stakeholders across the agri-food chain, focusing on challenges such as fair living standards for farmers, ecological sustainability, technological innovation, and global competitiveness.

The Strategic Dialogue seeks to cover all policies around agriculture and food production, providing a platform for stakeholders to voice concerns, solutions, and ambitions, establishing a common ground for the Union’s agri-food sector, ensuring prosperity for rural communities and sustainable agriculture.

President von der Leyen emphasized the need to forge a new consensus on food and farming, recognizing the pivotal role of EU farmers in providing healthy, high-quality food and contributing significantly to the economy.

Thematic meetings throughout early 2024 will address these issues, involving farmers, co-operatives, businesses, rural communities, NGOs, and academia. The Council and European Parliament will actively participate, ensuring comprehensive dialogue.

The dialogue aims to deliver a clear vision by summer 2024, fostering new solutions and inclusively defining the future format. The outputs of the dialogue will be a step towards the drafting of the European Commission’s proposal for the post-2027 EU policies.
