This year, the theme of the International Mountain Day (11th December) is “Women move mountains”. To celebrate it, the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) has recently launched a photo contest to raise awareness of the key role of women in mountain areas.
Women play a key role in environmental protection and social and economic development in mountain areas. They are often the primary managers of mountain resources, guardians of biodiversity, keepers of traditional knowledge, custodians of local culture and experts in traditional medicine.
However, they have limited access to resources, services and opportunities. That is why mountain enthusiasts want to raise awareness about the need to empower mountain women so they can participate effectively in decision-making processes and have equal opportunities and control over productive resources.
How to participate?
- Submit a photo of women and/or a girl in mountains in a location such as a village, trail, market, landscape, site of cultural heritage, or the seat of a mountain community.
- Fill in the online entry form.
- Don’t forget to post your photo if you have a Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn or Flickr account, using the hashtag #MountainsMatter and tagging the Mountain Partnership.
The deadline for entries is 30 November 2022 (12.00 CET).
